What This Department Really Does
Post-production is where the magic truly happens. Everything before this -- the writing, the shooting, the on-set performances -- is just gathering raw material. In post, that material is sculpted, refined, and transformed into the final film.
Editors are storytellers. They don't just cut shots together -- they shape performances, control pacing, create rhythm, and build emotional arcs that didn't exist in any single take. A great editor can rescue a troubled production or elevate an already great one.
Colorists paint with light after the fact, creating visual moods and consistency that define how the audience experiences the film. VFX artists build worlds that never existed. Sound designers create sonic landscapes that immerse the audience in the story.
Post-production is where the longest hours are worked with the least recognition. The timeline pressure is enormous -- studios and distributors have release dates that don't move. But the work is deeply creative, technically demanding, and absolutely essential.
Every Seat at the Table
Assembles the film from raw footage, shaping the story's structure, pacing, and emotional arc. Works intimately with the director to find the best performance in every scene and the right rhythm for every cut. This is a deeply creative role that requires both technical mastery and storytelling instinct.
Manages the organizational infrastructure of the editing room: syncing dailies, organizing bins, managing media, prepping sequences, creating string-outs, and ensuring the editor has everything they need. Also handles exports, deliverables, and communication with post facilities.
Grades the final image, creating visual consistency and mood across the entire film. Works shot-by-shot, scene-by-scene to balance color, exposure, and contrast. A colorist can make a sunny day look ominous or a cold location look warm and inviting. This is one of the most impactful creative roles in post.
Oversees all visual effects work from on-set data capture through final delivery. Plans VFX shots during pre-production, supervises on-set elements (green screen, tracking markers, reference photography), and manages VFX vendors and artists through post.
Creates digital visual effects: compositing green screen, rotoscoping, 3D modeling and animation, digital matte painting, particle effects, and CGI integration. May specialize in specific areas like environments, creatures, or simulations.
Creates title sequences, on-screen graphics, animated transitions, lower thirds, and any other moving graphic elements. Combines design sensibility with animation skills.
Creates the sonic world of the film: ambiences, sound effects, designed sounds, and Foley. Works from spotting sessions with the director to build layered soundscapes that enhance the visual storytelling.
Performs the final audio mix, balancing dialogue, music, and effects into the completed soundtrack. Mixes for theatrical, streaming, broadcast, and other delivery formats. Works on a dubbing stage with calibrated speakers.
Creates physical sound effects in sync with picture: footsteps, cloth movement, object handling, impacts. Works on a Foley stage watching the picture and performing the sounds live, which are recorded and edited into the soundtrack.
Manages the integration of the musical score and licensed music into the film. Works with the composer, editor, and music supervisor to ensure music is properly spotted, temp-tracked, and finally laid in. Handles all music deliverables.
