Stunts & SFX

Controlled Chaos, Calculated Risk

Every explosion, every car chase, every fistfight, every fall from a building -- it all looks spontaneous on screen, but behind every second of action is meticulous planning, engineering, and some of the bravest professionals in the industry.

What This Department Really Does

Stunts and practical Special Effects are where adrenaline meets engineering. Nothing on a film set requires more planning, more safety protocols, and more trust than stunt work. When a performer is set on fire, hit by a car, or falls from a rooftop, there is zero margin for error.

The Stunt Coordinator is part choreographer, part physicist, part psychologist. They design action sequences that look dangerous but are engineered to be as safe as possible. They hire performers whose specific skills match what the scene requires -- martial arts, high falls, precision driving, fire burns, wire work.

Practical SFX is the art of creating physical effects on camera: rain, wind, fog, explosions, bullet hits, breakaway walls, collapsing structures. Unlike CGI, practical effects happen in real-time, giving actors something real to react to and giving the audience something visceral to experience.

Safety is not negotiable in this department. Every stunt is rehearsed, every effect is tested, every safety measure is redundant. Because at the end of the day, these are human beings doing extraordinary things, and they all need to go home to their families.

Every Seat at the Table

Stunt Coordinator
$1,000 - $3,000+/day Department Head

Designs, choreographs, and supervises all stunt work. Creates action sequences in collaboration with the director, hires stunt performers, conducts safety meetings, and has the authority to shut down any stunt they deem unsafe. This is one of the most high-responsibility positions in the industry.

Stunt Performer
$800 - $1,500+/day (+ adjustments) Performer

Executes stunts: fights, falls, vehicle work, fire burns, water work, wire gags. Must be athletically versatile and able to perform convincingly on camera while maintaining safety. Many stunt performers specialize in specific disciplines.

Stunt Double
$800 - $1,500+/day (+ adjustments) Performer

Doubles for a specific actor in scenes requiring dangerous action. Must match the actor's build, movement style, and on-camera appearance from behind. Often wears prosthetic makeup or wigs to enhance the match.

Fight Choreographer
$800 - $2,000/day Specialist

Designs hand-to-hand combat sequences: fistfights, sword fights, martial arts. Teaches the choreography to actors and stunt performers, ensuring it looks real on camera while maintaining safety.

SFX Supervisor
$700 - $1,500/day Department Head

Designs and oversees all practical on-set effects: rain, wind, fog, smoke, fire, explosions, bullet hits, mechanical gags. Plans effects during pre-production, coordinates with other departments during shooting, and ensures all effects are safe and properly permitted.

SFX Technician
$400 - $800/day Crew

Builds, installs, and operates practical effects rigs: rain bars, wind machines, fog machines, pneumatic devices, breakaway elements, blood rigs, and more. Must be skilled in plumbing, electrical, mechanical engineering, and fabrication.

Pyrotechnician
$600 - $1,500/day Specialist

Licensed specialist in explosives and fire effects. Plans and executes controlled detonations, flash pots, flame bars, spark effects, and fire burns. Must hold proper federal and state licenses and follow strict safety protocols.

Armorer / Weapons Master
$500 - $1,000/day Specialist

Manages all weapons on set -- real firearms (loaded with blanks), replica weapons, rubber/foam stunt weapons, and edged weapons. Responsible for weapons safety, actor training, and strict chain-of-custody protocols.

Rigging / Wire Work Specialist
$600 - $1,200/day Specialist

Designs and operates wire rigs for flying, high falls, and stunt pulls (ratchets). Must understand physics, rigging engineering, and performer safety. Often works at extreme heights.
